It all begins with two things: Leotards and tutus. Refusing to wear normal clothing, young Sammie wore leotards and tutus exclusively to preschool. This desire to beat to my own drum and use fashion as a mean to do so began very early for me. From changing my outfit multiple times a day to having my heart set on ballet inspired clothing, dressing is a means of expression for me.
As I grew older and in high school, I would sketch my dream outfits and paste Vogue clippings into my sketchbook. I loved how fashion could evoke a feeling, express your individuality, and alter your day. From wearing communicative color palletes to playing with texture, picking out an outfit has always been my favorite time of the day.
When the time to start looking at colleges, majoring in fashion was not initially on my radar until I took an introductory course for a merchandising minor. I noticed that this class was fun, interesting, and engaging for me. It was like putting my hobbies all in one and taking a class on it. The work did not feel like work, it felt like fun.
As I learned more about the industry and speaking to others, I learned that to dive into the creative aspects of the business a design degree was necessary. I decided that after 2.5 years in college that I would transfer into a four year program. Knowing that I would only be able to shave off so much time, I knew that it would be an investment and would pay off for my entire life.
Taking that risk to transfer into "that Fashion Design program at Belmont" was the best decision I ever made. I have learned creative discipline, developed my artistic abilities, and worked harder than ever before. I am so grateful that I get to pursue my dreams every day and work towards dreams that inspire me.
I see now the seeds that God planted in me from a young age that has lead me to where I am now. I am excited to see where my design career takes me and how my future unfolds.
